Beware Your Civic Duty

Filed under: News — lmwalker @ 10:14 am

My mother alerted me to a form of identity theft that swirls around jury duty. Individuals are randomly called, threatened with an arrest warrant for “failing to report for jury duty” and are asked for their SSN and date of birth.

While the threat seems sorta on the older side, I thought it was interesting.

It all boils down to the same thing: never give that sort of information over the phone.

  1. I would think they’d send a couple of letters to you before you were in trouble. And I wouldn’t think they’d have your phone number (as jury duty lottery is based on your draft/voter registration/license and address).

    But what do I know?

    Southern District of Illinois:
Any juror who fails to report for jury duty and who is not excused by the Court may be served with a Show Cause Order by the U. S. Marshal’s Office. Subsequently, those jurors will be required to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of the Court pursuant to the Jury Selection Act. Contempt penalties range from a fine of $100.00 to three days imprisonment, or both. (U.S.C. 28 Sec. 1866(g).)

    DuPage County:
You must have a DuPage County address in order to serve as a juror. Please use the form provided with your summons to be excused from service. All requests must also provide verification of move through either an updated driver’s license or voter card.

To serve as a juror you must be:

    • At least 18 years old
    • A United States citizen
    • Have a DuPage County address
    • Be able to understand the English language

DuPage’s website doesn’t mention the penalties, but I’m sure they’re high.

  2. But what do I know?

A lot more than most people, which is why this particular scam works.

  3. There is no patch for human stupidity.
