You Know Who You Are

For those who wondered about the surprise Thanksgiving guest . . .

Anne and I retrieved an honest-to-goodness ex-New Yorker (most definitely not a suburbanite) in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. He had recently relocated to St. Louis and was driving to Newport News to surprise his family for Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, his newly acquired BMW 325i hit a patch of ice a minute before we did. Both cars spun out. Both cars slammed into the same point (approximately) of the guardrail. But our (and by “our,” I mean “Anne’s”) car only suffered some rear panel damage, while Greg’s car was totalled.

Since his situation seemed rather desperate (and he didn’t seem particularly serial-killerish at all) we took pity on his soul and transported him to Charlottesville, where we fueled him with 6:00 a.m. coffee and ibuprofen for his stiff neck. He then left us to join some distant cousins in a nearby town.

We saw him again on Sunday, when he was kind enough to return to Charlottesville with Starbucks whole-bean coffee, thus earning him the general reputation of amiability and good taste. He had acquired a Subaru over the weekend and was headed back to the Midwest. We wished him well, Anne gave him a hug, and he continued on his way.

And that is the story of the Thanksgiving guest – a highlight of the weekend and an exciting tale to boot.
