HIV Prevention

I don’t want to shock anyone unduly, but the Pope promotes abstinence. Yes, indeed. It’s true!

(This is such ground-breaking news that it was headlined on The Drudge Report.)

  1. Not a surprise. Good for him to ignore the fact that abstinence programs are ineffective and counterproductive. It takes some guts to flaunt empirical evidence and replace it with faith.

Seriously though, I think the reason that this made the Drudge Report is that it’s a major policy statement by a major world leader. It would be kind of dumb not to report it even if it was the same, dumb, expected behavior.

Someone wake me up when this one croaks.

In that case, I guess I should admire people who think the UN is a credible organization that will bring “peace” and “human rights” to the world, and wave the Geneva Convention around with a zeal that is, well, religious. But I won’t, because laughing at them is way more fun.

    …Yeah, yeah, I’m off-topic, sue me….

Nah, but it takes guts to hold fast to an admittedly good principle when the world dismisses it as ridiculous.

Besides, it’s his job. He’s in the business of guiding Catholics in matters of faith and morals.

(Hmm . . . this looks like it might become a rehash of a previous thread. I better dust off my catechism.) 😉

  5. For every report that cites the failure of abstinence encouragement, you can google search and come up with one that cites the success of same.

What is it that is so frightening about encouraging young people to abstain from sexual intercourse?

This is very intriguing…… so, Toly, how much are you worth?

  7. Are we talking networth, or the intrinsic value of every human person?

  8. I don’t think Auntlori can sue me for my intrinsic value…

And Mark, my UN comment was not really directed at you.
