John Kerry and His Million-Man Army

Filed under: News — lmwalker @ 5:15 pm

Remember the unsubstantiated allegations by CBS that George Bush was planning to reinstate the draft?

It turns out that John Kerry is actually the man calling for mandatory national servce. On his (now removed) web page:

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

Perhaps the CBS “journalistic standards” have sunk to such an extreme that they are mixing up their candidates.

  1. Well, in all fairness, I don’t think Kerry’s national service would take place in a combat zone. “Mandatory volunteering” is an odious idea that just won’t die, but it’s hardly the draft.

Now, the bill proposed by Charles Rangel (D, New York) — that’s to bring back the draft.

  2. Well, even William F. Buckley, Jr., has sort of endorsed national service, though I think his was “volunteer” in the sense that (if I recall) good colleges wouldn’t take you if you hadn’t done it, and so forth.

Not quite the draft, which isn’t coming back.
